William Steig
William Steig was a children’s book author and illustrator. He was born in Brooklyn New York, November 14, 1907. His father was an Austrian house painter, and his mother loved the fine arts. In his childhood he loved to draw cartoons. He loved to read books with a lot of adventure.
He spent two years at City College, three years at the National Academy, and five days at the Yale School of Fine Arts before he got kicked out for drawing too much. He married three times and had three children, Jeremy, Lucy, and Maggie.
Steig’s illustrating style is simple designs like stick figures for people and animals and then he puts in all the details. Since he liked to draw when he was young, he had a lot of experience by the time he started illustrating. He used soft colors for people and animals and then used bright colors for his backrounds. His backrounds have a lot of detail to them. Steig says he just goes with the flow and lets his pencil guide him.
He has written hundreds of books and here are a few of them, CDB, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, The Amazing Bone, Abel’s Island, Caleb and Kate, Tiffky and Doofky, and Dr. De Soto.
Abel’s Island and Dr. De Soto won the Newbery Honor. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble won the Caldecott Medal and The Amazing Bone won the Caldecott Honor.
William Steig died in 2003 at age 95. He has written books that will just blow your mind! If you don’t believe me, why don’t you see for yourself!
